As you are already aware, ever since the new National Security Law came into effect in June 2020, many HK people are feeling insecure and so many are relocating to live in other countries because they feel that they have lost the freedom they have been used to in Hong Kong. They fear for their family and children and are emigrating to places where they feel they can maintain a life style they have been accustomed to in HK.

Most of those leaving, are choosing to relocate to the UK and to live there permanently and some have opted to relocate to USA, Canada and other European Countries as they are afraid to continue to live in Hong Kong because they feel freedom has been taken away from them.

For those of you who are considering relocating to another country, we wish to point out that Japan is a most viable option for you, especially since HK will no longer allow dual citizenship which means you will now have to choose one citizenship only as a HK Citizen.

You should choose to live in Japan because you need not have to cut your original roots and ties to HK and to China, as you would be doing by emigrating to UK or other Western countries.

You can maintain your roots and ties to HK by keeping and using your HK Passport which means you can retain your status quo and ties to visit China any time while living in Japan and at the same time enjoy the freedom and the democratic way of life Japan has to offer you, which you have been used to in Hong Kong. There would be no need to make a hard choice to shun China and for your roots and ties to be cut off completely .

Japan is a good viable option!  It is not necessary to make such a drastic change because Japan is very close to home in Hong Kong and Japan welcomes you with open arms.   1. Japan is a most secure, safe Country, highly advanced and developed with a culture not entirely foreign to the HK people. Just to give you an example, a 1000 sq. ft. 2 bed room apartment in Kobe Japan in an upscale area with a fabulous harbor view like living in mid- levels in Hong Kong would cost you only about HK$8000 per month in rent. If you rent something like this in Hong Kong, you would have to pay over HK$30,000 per month in rent. If you purchase an apartment like this in Kobe for example, it would cost about HK$2-3 Million only whereas in HK it would cost about 10 times more to own . Think about this carefully. Most HK people have assets in equity in their current homes,and  while the values of their homes are still high, it would be wise to pull some money out of their HK homes to purchase some property in Japan as a safety measure to hedge their wealth and to possibly live in it or rent it out for additional income.
